Hey. It's been a while. Do you guys wanna hear about Sunsetta? The band you guys are sleeping on way too hard?? Well, what these nice young men are doing is so special. I really want to stress the fact that it's against the law for a band this good to still have their sub count at 60. I got into these guys fairly recently, and for their vast sound of singles, I wanted to know how they were going to approach an actual longer piece like this one, instead of just singles. Let me tell you, they knew exactly what they were doing. I did some research and I found out that these were actually the first 5 songs they wrote, and everything they released prior to this has been made after these batch of songs, so it was pretty obvious they were going for quality over quantity with this release. With very little to no information about what this EP actually was, I checked it out, and was instantly blown away.
We open up with them chatting about which guitar to use and after a countdown we are instantly jumped into the world of Just Say Goodbye, a great opening moment. I can see why they put it at the beginning, as it is right in the middle of the classic rock sound, with a lot of new elements to it. It's so poppy and fresh but sounds so familiar, it's great. After that we immediately get into Nasty, a song about... someone being nasty. It's the shortest song here, however, it doesn't feel like it, in a good way. It's a smoother cut with instrumentals that feel so nice to listen to, it's such a bop.
Then we segway into the two most unexpected songs on here, Size Me Up and Diss Your Fear. Ho-ly shart, we need to talk about these. Size Me Up starts so nice, so peaceful, but it doesn't take long for the song to really kick in. It's so grungy, it's amazing how they pulled off this sound so well, but with the smoothest transitions in between songs, we get Diss Your Fear, a song that reminds me a lot of Lotus Eater by Foster The People, but Tom's vocals on this one make this stand out as its own thing. But then, we get the unexpected lead, and only, single from here as the closing track, Waste of Time. I like the song, don't get me wrong, however, does it even fit in a project like this? Maybe because it was a single and I did listen to it before I knew it was the closing track, because if I knew, I wouldn't have heard it otherwise, but this stands out like a sore thumb in a project like this, and it almost feels like an unsatisfying closing moment. The song, however, is actually really nice. The vocals could've been improved upon, but it's a great song nonetheless.
I really, really enjoyed this EP. I know that because I'm publishing this not even an hour after I listened to it for the first time. I knew I immediately had to review this just because I don't want this to slip through the cracks. Keep on rockin, Sunsetta, you guys are doing amazing
